Katydids belong to the order
Orthoptera, just like grasshoppers and crickets. Within Orthoptera, they are classified in the family Tettigoniidae. π·
οΈ There are two main groups of katydids: the long-horned katydids, which have long antennae, and the short-horned katydids with thicker antennae. Some well-known species include the Common Meadow Katydid, found in North America, and the Giant Katydid, which can be as long as 10 cm (4 inches)! πΏ
Scientists love studying these insects because each type has unique sounds, colors, and behaviors!
