The name Tethys also refers to an ancient ocean that existed millions of years ago. π
Scientists believe it existed during the Mesozoic Era, which lasted from about 252 to 66 million years ago. This ocean was very big and
split the supercontinent Pangaea into different parts. At that time, the Earth looked very different! The Tethys Ocean was located between todayβs continents of Africa, Europe, and Asia. π
Over millions of years, this ocean began to shrink because of changes in the Earthβs crust. It eventually disappeared, giving way to the continents we know today!
