During subduction, gravity plays a big role! โ
๏ธ The heavier oceanic plate is pulled down into the mantle, the hot layer beneath the Earth's crust. This creates what's called a โsubduction zone.โ There, friction and
pressure build up, causing the plates to stick together until they suddenly release. This release can cause earthquakes! Scientists also notice that as the oceanic plate sinks, water and other materials are released. This can lead to melting and the formation of magma, which can make its way to the surface, creating volcanoes. ๐
