In the early 1600s, Puritans, who wanted to practice their religion freely, settled in Salem. They believed in hard work and strict rules. β
οΈ Salem was originally called "Naumkeag," an
Algonquin word meaning "the place by the water." In 1692, during a time of fear and suspicion, the infamous witch trials began. Many people, especially women, were accused and tried for witchcraft. πͺ
οΈ These trials led to a lot of chaos and confusion. They ended the same year due to growing concerns about the fairness of the trials. Salem remembers this difficult time every year, especially during Halloween!
