NASA began on July 29, 1958, to give the U.S. a boost in space exploration ๐ . Before NASA, there was a space race with the Soviet Union. They launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, in 1957! This excited Americans to reach for the stars ๐. President Dwight D. Eisenhower wanted to create NASA to lead space exploration. The first big mission was Mercury in 1961, where astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space. Over the years, NASA has completed many amazing missions, helping us learn more about space and our planet every day!
