The Miwok people speak their own languages, which belong to the Penutian language family. The most well-known Miwok languages are Northern Miwok, Southern Miwok, and Coast Miwok. π
Each dialect sounds a little different, just like different accents in
English! For example, the Coast Miwok have words for sea animals, like βmuwiβ for sea lion. Some Miwok children are learning their languages today to keep the culture alive! π€
