Crane flies go through four stages in their life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and
adult. π
The female lays her eggs in damp soil or shallow water. After a few days, the eggs hatch into larvae, also called "leatherjackets." They mostly feed on decaying plants in the ground. π±
The larval stage can last from a few weeks to several months! Then, they burrow into the soil and turn into pupae, where they transform into adults. This amazing process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a whole year, depending on the species and environment! β³
