The idea for the Brooklyn Bridge started in 1855 when John A. Roebling, a German engineer, dreamt of connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan. After his death, his son, Washington Roebling, took over the project π§. Construction began in 1869, and it was completed in 1883. The opening ceremony included hundreds of
people crossing the bridge on foot! At first, many were scared, thinking it might fall. To prove it was safe, P.T. Barnum, a famous showman, led 21 elephants across the bridge! π
This event helped people gain confidence in the new structure.
