Blast furnaces were invented a long time ago! The first ones began around 200 BC in ancient China. π
By the 1600s, they were common in Europe, especially in countries like England and Germany. In 1709, an Englishman named Abraham Darby made a big improvement when he used coke, a type of coal, instead of
charcoal. This made the furnaces even hotter! π₯
This allowed more iron to be made faster. Today, modern blast furnaces are bigger and more efficient than ever, helping us create metals for tons of things we use every day!
